Keeping Up

A certain amount of Keeping Up is part of our social contract. I’m wondering when Keeping Up just isn’t worth it?

What is your “Dope”?

“Dope” is what we do when we’re seeking pleasure or avoiding pain at the lowest common denominator. It is that quick, easy shot of something to kill our anxiety, or our worry, or our apathy, or our self-loathing. It is that thing we need to just deal with our day, to deal with the people in our lives, to deal with ourselves. It is what we do when we don’t want to do anything. It is how we avoid and postpone life.

Not Me-ism

At the ripe age of 34, I feel like I have enough life experience to have something worth looking back on.  Certainly, I'm not writing memoirs or imparting life lessons to the youth yet, but I'm over the humps of the reckless abandon of childhood, the blind optimism of...

Change Without Hitting Rock Bottom

"Bob?  He's doing great now.  He finally made the changes he needed to make in his life.  He had to - he hit rock bottom.  His addiction nearly killed him, but after losing his house, car, job, and family when his wife couldn't take it anymore, he decided enough was...

Letting The Cat Out Of The Bag

You can call me anything, but don't call me predictable. Friends, about 2 months ago, while talking to longtime friend Aaron Specht, I floated an idea his way.  (For those that don't know, I met Aaron years ago when he was a bartender at Solera with me)  It would...

My Initial CrossFit Review

Please note: ^This is not me.   Last night, I completed my first CrossFit on-ramp training module.  6 classes over a 2 week period, with each class featuring instruction on the basic series of exercises involved in CrossFit and ending with a WOD - or Workout Of the...

Back To Blogging?

Two and a half years ago, I quit my job at an intellectual law firm.  The plan, as detailed in a previous blog post, was to provide social media marketing services for local small businesses. Things did not go according to plan. This was both a good thing and a bad...

AFI: #97, Bringing Up Baby

*Note: I've been holding onto this one because I didn't want to post them out of order.  But its taking me forever to watch the next movie, so I figure I'll just post this one and move along. Bringing Up Baby (1938) was apparently a box-office flop.  I'm going to have...

Oh No Phillip…What Did You Do This Time?

Well, by the time this post goes live, I will have done something semi-revolutionary (for me): I quit my job!   Now, unless things went worse than expected, I'm probably still employed.  I've never NOT given a two week notice, and this is no exception.  Whether...

AFI: #99, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is a film about a time and a place.  The time was the 1960s.  The place was America.  The story?  Simple, really:  Guy meets girl.  They fall in love.  Girl brings guy home to ask for her parents blessing in marriage.  Booooooring.  So...

AFI: #100, Yankee Doodle Dandy

Yankee Doodle Dandy is a 1942 film directed by Michael Curtiz.  It stars James Cagney in the lead role of George M. Cohan, with supporting roles by Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, and Richard Whorf.  In the interest of full disclosure - I have no idea who these people...

My take on “5 Myths Atheists Believe About Religion”

Unless you've stumbled upon this blog accidentally, you likely already know that I'm an atheist.  It's no big news for me, I've been comfortable with it my entire life, but for some, it may come as a surprise.  "But you're such a good person," they say, as though the...

Watching the 1998 AFI 100 years…100 movies List

In keeping with the "write about whatever the hell I feel like" theme, I think I'll share a little hobby I have going. In 1998, The American Film Institute put out a list entitled 100 years...100 movies.  Basically, it was the top 100 "important" films in American...

OMGWTFBBQ!?!?

Duuuuuuuuuude - what happened? Phillipholland.com was humming along just fine.  You were losing weight, you were planning your AONCMBA, you were writing about it.  And then, in a very typical blogger move, what did you do?  You vanished.  No explanation.  No posts....

10th Update: Quick one, I’m on vacation!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm going on vacation!  See that aerial shot to the left?  That will be my homebase for the next week and a half.  The whole family is coming, and we will be indulging in all things good and proper - scuba, surfing, ziplines, atvs,...
